Vernon Koning has been arrested and charged with rape and strangulation following an early-morning incident on Feb. 8 in Crystal City, according to the Arlington Police Department.

At around 2:15 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, officers were alerted about a reported rape that had just taken place.

Investigators say that the woman was walking in the area when she began talking with Koning, who allegedly led her to an outdoor area in the 200 block of 12th Street South, where he sexually and physically assaulted her.

Following the attack, the victim was able to get free and ran to the 900 block of Long Bridge Drive, where she was able to seek assistance.

"Police immediately initiated a comprehensive criminal investigation," officials said. "A review of evidence and witness interviews led detectives to the identity of the suspect."

Koning was taken into custody late on Thursday during a traffic stop in the area. He was arrested without incident and charged. He is being held without bond at the Arlington County Detention Facility.

The incident remains under investigation.
